Outstanding Woman – Donna Kovalevich

For the past 28 years, Donna Kovalevich has been serving Camden County’s elderly and disabled through Senior Citizens United Community Services (SCUCS), a private, non-profit social service agency she founded in 1979.

Passionate about the elderly, she recognized the need to develop programs and services that would help the elderly to remain in their homes and avoid institutionalization, a concept now widely endorsed by policy makers at every level of government.

Over the years SCUCS has pioneered many new initiatives which have been replicated throughout New Jersey:  Shared Housing, Respite Care, Budget Counseling, and Adult Family Care. The agency also offers personal care services, homemaker services, emergency services, a food shelf and housing counseling.
One of the agency’s greatest accomplishments has been the creation of a coordinated and specialized transportation system for elderly and disabled known as Sen-Han Transit. This award winning paratransit system has been recognized statewide for its efficiency and effectiveness. It serves 3300 residents with 140,000 rides annually.

Kovalevich is chair of the county’s Aging Subcoalition and is a member of CPAC’s Human Services Council. She has held key positions with the NJ Council on Special Transportation (COST), and has served on numerous county and state advisory committees.

A graduate of Rutgers University, Kovalevich and her husband Joe live in Oaklyn. They have two children, Keith and Denise.
