Patients often ask “Is it truly possible to turn back the clock and reverse aging in a safe, dramatic, and healthy way?” The answer, yes it is! Clinical advances in laser and cosmetic dermatology have resulted in a myriad of nonsurgical, minimally invasive treatment options for patients.
Photodynamic skin rejuvenation is an FDA approved procedure that has opened the door to a new era of “non-ablative” laser resurfacing that in addition to anti-aging eliminates precancerous skin lesions (actinic keratosis) and reduces future risk of skin cancer.
By addressing the core issue of skin aging, this medical laser treatment reverses the aging process – literally. Many anti-aging dermatologic procedures can take years off a woman’s complexion, but this procedure goes beyond that to improve the health of the skin itself. And healthy, rejuvenated skin ages much more gracefully than unhealthy, sun-damaged skin.
The process can reverse photoaging, which results in brown spots (solar lentigines); thin sagging skin due to loss of collagen and elasticity; broken red veins; dull, coarse skin texture; loss of vitality; enlarged pores; volume loss; wrinkles; and those dreaded jowls. Photodynamic skin rejuvenation can also treat rosacea, acne, and acne scars.
How Photodynamic Skin Rejuvenation Works
The procedure takes three hours. Our treatment protocol involves a thorough cleansing of the skin followed by microdermabrasion. A photosensitizing medicine (Levulan ALA) is then applied to the face and neck or to the decolette and shoulders. The Levulan is allowed to penetrate the damaged skin, brown spots, actinic keratosis, inflamed vessels, and pores where the collagen-producing cells (fibroblasts) sit. This penetration process takes anywhere from 60 minutes to two hours, depending on the degree of damage and the skin area involved. A Vbeam laser or IPL laser is then used to “activate” the Levulan. We perform multiple passes with the laser to selectively destroy diseased, damaged areas while having minimal effect on normal skin.
At this point, a regenerative process begins. Initially, patients experience a mild sunburn-like reaction for two to four days, with shedding of the damaged skin. The skin recovers rapidly with our adjunctive wound-healing LED light and a carefully monitored skin care program. We then combine additional skin tightening and collagen-stimulating laser to further enhance the results.
Not only is photodynamic skin rejuvenation effective, it is very safe. It can be customized for various dermatologic and cosmetic applications and can be modified to safely treat every skin type and ethnicity, including Asian and African American skin.
After treatment, the skin is smoother, softer, luminous, more even-toned, and thicker, with dramatically diminished wrinkles, pore shrinkage, and regenerative collagen. The results often exceed people’s expectations.
