Did you know that there are approximately 7,500 children in New Jersey currently in out-of-home placements? These children often face extremely difficult living situations such as abuse or neglect, poverty and even homelessness. According to the Department of Youth and Family Services (DYFS), there are only 950 new foster homes approved each year, leaving thousands of children and adolescents without a safe place to call home.
Did you also know that New Jersey is home to thousands of adults with developmental disabilities who don’t have access to the care and support they need in the community? According to New Jersey’s Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) more than 40,000 individuals are eligible to receive services but many are forced to live in restrictive settings or go without the supports they need to live successfully in the community.
Fortunately, you can help and you don’t have to do it alone. At New Jersey MENTOR, we believe that every individual should have the opportunity to receive services and supports in their own communities. We also believe in the power of relationships and their ability to create a positive impact on people’s lives. That’s why we’ve been finding homes and creating families for children and adults throughout the Garden State for more than twenty years.
By becoming a foster parent or caregiver for an adult, you’ll have the chance to positively change a life. You’ll also receive a competitve stipend, comprehensive support, skill development opportunities, and the chance to experience the joy of helping others from the comfort of your own home.
