Many of us may have found ourselves offering thanks at Thanksgiving, a festival of foods, only to be followed by the season of eating and then the resolution “hopes” to begin anew. “LETTING GO” of the unwanted weight or “LIGHTENING UP” on the daily medications* should become our priority if our health is of any importance in 2011. What are your reasons for addressing your weight and/or health concerns? Have you, like many of us, tried other programs only in the end to find ourselves questioning how we can permanently “LET IT GO” and keep it gone? This vicious cycle is “not our fault” and yet is all too familiar. This conflict of self-control and emotional eating constantly manipulates our ability to lose weight for the long term.
“LETTING IT GO” takes motivation to really want it along with the knowledge and support to make it happen! First you must realize that there is no going back. Think of all your bad and unhealthy habits for what they are —a mechanism that is holding you back from feeling great, having more energy and looking and being fit. It can sometimes be difficult to say goodbye to unconscious eating, over eating and over indulgence of any kind, be it food or drink. But remembering how you felt the next day, bloated, tired and maybe even sorry that you succumbed to unhealthy choices may be the first step to changing your unhealthy habits. Recall is a great defense for our conscious mind. Positively focusing on what you DO want — not what you don’t want can help rid our negative brainwashing.
“LIGHTENING UP” can begin with small daily choices that become long-term habits because our habits do determine our health. Small, simple things done each day can either lead us towards disease or towards optimal well-being and even longevity. Which direction we take depends on how we use our power of choice.
Habits are things we do regularly without too much thinking. These habits form behavior patterns and through repetition become our daily routine. Things like, we sit down to watch TV and the fatty chips and dips appear almost like magic, whether we are hungry or not. Triggers like stress, anger, boredom and depression can begin an endless cycle of eating. Regaining mastery over our actions starts when we stop to think so that our conscious mind has time to override our unconscious and transform unhealthy habits into healthy choices.
The decision to STOP, CHALLENGE AND CHOOSE differently is powerful. It can break the link between events, unpleasant emotions and undesirable reactions. The satisfaction from eating a food you crave is momentary. When it comes to cravings, a TIP that comes to mind is the 3—BITE RULE: The 3 bite rule is just this — the first 3 bites of ANYTHING is when you experience the MOST flavor sensation from your food. Beyond that you are just racking up unwanted calories. STOP, CHALLENGE yourself to stay at 3 bites, and CHOOSE to enjoy the taste without the calories. This can begin a positive pattern of success!
Remember, we said there is no going back. Make a list of “your” motivating reasons for “letting it go” and pull your list out when you need some positive reminders. This can help hold you accountable to your success in 2011.
