Fall...My Favorite Fashion Season!

Lisa Wolstromer

Say goodbye to the lazy days of summer and hello to brisk autumn nights.  It’s fall, and it’s my favorite fashion season. I can put away my tanning lotion, shorts, and sleeveless tops in exchange for my knee-high boots, pea coat, and pantsuit. When it comes to finding the latest trends for fall, there’s no better place to search than Cherry Hill Mall with its roster of leading fashion brands including:  Michael Kors, Henri Bendel, True Religion, White House Black Market, Francesca’s Collection and Guess by Marciano, just to name a few.

Overall, this fall is all about regal elegance, a chic take on military, grandmom’s closet, American heritage, and primal instincts. Key pieces range from crochet shawls, corset tops, structured blazers and boyfriend jeans to patterned pants, shirt dresses, chunky knit sweaters, and vests.

The Colors of Fall
I’m an emotional gal, and the color of the outfit I’m wearing can set my mood.  Colors can strike an emotional connection too.

A bright yellow brings a smile, deep blue a patriotic feeling, reds make us feel sensual, and black adds confidence.  You can make a statement with color; and the palette for fall is an array of dark, bold and romantic jewel and earth tones — a vast difference from the bright neon and pale pastels of spring.

According to Pantone® the color of the year is Tangerine Tango, but look out for vibrant yellows and gold tones, pulsing pinks, deep cool blues, and winter white. This season burgundy and dark brown are nice alternatives to black. If you spin the color wheel and had to select one color to land on, stick to the purples/purple-grays/and red tones. Burgundy, or Chianti, is hot this year and, like black, compliments many other colors.

Embrace the monochromatic look, with one color head to toe, for fall. It’s simple yet sophisticated and slimming.

Shape Shifters
Peplum was popular this past spring/summer, and this trend will carry into fall, transforming dresses, jackets, and tops. Peplum is a flattering silhouette and a great style to emphasize your feminine shape, as it cinches and then flows at the waist.  If you’re not a fan of this style, adorn any outfit with a belt for another quick and easy way to create a shapely figure.

The pencil skirt is another option to help create a lean stature; pair it with a simple sweater and timeless pumps for a classic look.  If skirts aren’t your thing then you’re in luck because this season the pantsuit is back, yet redesigned into a more contemporary, fresh look.

Finish off any of these styles with a great day clutch or a bowler bag; both popular purses this season.

Printed patterns and strong textiles are everywhere this fall; on dresses, jeans, sweaters, handbags and even sunglasses. Florals, art deco, lace, tweeds, fur accents, feathers, fringe, leather, suede, velvet, and brocades all radiate old-world glamour and new found freedom. The busier and nosier, the better. Fabrics are bountiful with detail and heavy on embellishment and embroidery.  It may seem eccentric, but try mixing these patterns and prints — just don’t mix more than three — and layer with blocks of color.

Whimsical Accessories
It’s a gilded fall, rich with sequins and exaggerated shapes. Layer on the accessories.  One really innovative trend is collars.  Yes, attachable, ornate collars. Wear them just like a necklace to create a brand new look for your existing clothes. It’s all about the neck this season, with pendant necklaces and chokers also leading the way.

Seek and Find
Looking for knee-high brown boots, a burgundy pea coat, or printed jeans? The answer to your fashion search is just a click away. Cherry Hill Mall introduced a Product Search feature on its PREIT Mall app and mall website — just in time for fall shopping. The free service, which is powered by Google, allows you to search for specific items that are found in participating stores’ inventories so that you can better plan your shopping trip.  Download the PREIT Malls app via iTunes or Google Play, or go to the home page of the mall’s website.  It’s a great added convenience, as shoppers are also able to create a shopping list in Product Search and share it via email. You can use this cool feature at Moorestown Mall and Voorhees Town Center too!
